Franklin's grouse (F. franklinii) of British Columbia and the Rocky Mountains was recently split as a distinct species from Falcipennis canadensis and also consists of the subspecies isleibi in Prince of Wales Island and nearby Alexander Archipelago in southeast Alaska.
