Animalia > Chordata > Mammalia > Artiodactyla > Bovidae > Hemitragus > Hemitragus jemlahicusHemitragus jemlahicus (Himalayan tahr)The Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) is a large ungulate native to the Himalayas in southern Tibet, northern India and Nepal. It is also known as a thar, esp. in the Western Himalayas. It is listed as Near Threatened by IUCN, as the population is declining due to hunting and habitat loss. Results of a phylogenetic analysis indicate that the Himalayan tahr is associated with wild goats, and the genus Hemitragus monospecific. The Himalayan tahr has been introduced to New Zealand and South Africa. |
