Description:This buttonbush shrubland occurs widely in the south-central interior and unglaciated midwestern United States; examples occur in shallow water depressions, oxbow ponds, beaver ponds, and backwater sloughs of stream and river floodplains and are dominated by Cephalanthus occidentalis which may comprise nearly 90% of the shrub layer.
