It is monotypic within the genus Psaltria. The species was once placed, along with the rest of its family, with the true tits, Paridae. Its relationship with other species in its family is uncertain, but is still placed within the family due to similarities in behaviour and vocalisations. The pygmy bushtit is the smallest member of its family, and the smallest species of bird on Java. It is 8.5 to 8.7 cm (3.3–3.4 in) in length. |
