It inhabits environments adjacent to reefs at depths of from 8 to 40 metres (26 to 131 ft). It is a carnivorous species, feeding on benthic invertebrates. This species can reach a length of 40 centimetres (16 in) TL though most do not exceed 35 centimetres (14 in) TL. Mostly silver in color, often with brownish tones or markings on the sides. This species is of minor importance to local commercial fisheries, though it occasionally has an unpleasant iodine flavor to the flesh.
