Description:This eastern hemlock - hardwood forest is found on steep, north-facing sites along rivers and large streams in the Piedmont, and rarely the inner Coastal Plain, of Virginia and Maryland; examples contain the trees Fagus grandifolia, Quercus montana , Betula lenta, and Quercus rubra; Tsuga canadensis is common in the understory but was formerly codominant in the canopy.
