The Long-nosed bandicoots (genus Perameles) are members of the order Peramelemorphia. Perameles, or ‘pouched badger’, is a hybrid word, from the Greek pera (πήρα, ‘pouch, bag’) and the Latin mēles (‘marten, badger’).
